A Little Bit About
Granny's |
 |
This two-story Victorianesque
brick block was built in 1891 to house the prestigious hardware
firm of Tontz & Hershi. The original building's pressed-metal
cornice, capped by two fan-shaped raised ornaments, was among
the most ornate in the city.
E.J. Hershi was Guthrie's only listed cornice maker, and
probably created many of the city's cornices.
The original owners John Tontz and E.J. Hershi came to Guthrie
in 1889 and began to sell flour, feed and hardware from eleven
and thirteen west Harrison. The rear of the building was
used as a cigar factory.
By 1902, John Tontz had left the firm and Hershi & Knebel, Co.
incorporated and consolidated with the Oklahoma Hardware Co. of
Oklahoma City.
From 1961 to the 1980's the building housed an auto parts store.
In April of 1990, Granny Had One opened it's doors with
antiques and home-cooked food like Granny would have fixed. In
1991, Z. Peltz was commissioned to paint the large
mural on the
east wall in the Garden Room
which was taken from a 1911 photograph of Oklahoma Avenue. The
two latest
murals, which include many local customers and
family, were done by Doris DeSilva, including one from a circa
1891 photo of this building.
